I guess it might be normal in NYC but in 2018 I went to New York. It was halloween night and I was being taken to a halloween parade and we stopped by a Starbucks to use the restroom I myself was fine and didn't need it so I got a snack since it looked like the restroom was busy and I had time while I waited for my friends. I went to a hot dog cart/truck and before I could say anything in a very heavy thick accent the cook asked "you are tourist?" I said yes and asked how he knew, instead of answering me he just said "you want hot dog? I make it special..." I was at a loss for words but noded in approval, not that I could say otherwise it seemed they made up their mind for me. So I waited a few mins and moved aside.
